Main Gate

It is unclear when the gate was constructed, but it appeared on a map of the estate from 250 years ago. Currently the north side is built in the irimoya style and the south in the kirizuma style, though at the time it was reversed.

It is unclear why the Ichimura family, despite being of the merchant class were allowed to have a gate fashioned in the style of a samurai household. Perhaps the restrictions were looser because Obuse was under direct control of the Emperor.
During a night in 1842 (Tenpo 13), Katsushika Hokusai first entered through these gates.
